Teaching in Virginia Beach in 2022, Ven. Chuc Thanh shared this observation with the sangha: “There are three parts to the practice of Buddhism: Wisdom, Concentration and the Five Precepts. Wisdom refers to the highest wisdom, the recognition of impermanence, non-self and the circle of life and death. Concentration refers to our overcoming life’s obstacles and challenges. The Five Precepts, refraining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, speaking falsehoods and refraining from intoxicants define the moral life.”
This teaching provides ample opportunity for contemplation and self-evaluation without the need for commentary for experienced practitioners. The references to the ideas of impermanence, non-self and the circle of life and death are not able to be addressed in this brief space for people new to Buddhism. A source for more information on these concepts is www.accesstoinsight.org, where a search by topic will bring the reader a wealth of information to consider.
